In August 2012 I will attach myself to helium filled balloons with a lifting power of more than 300kg in an attempt to float from Robben Island to the mainland shore of Cape Town to raise at least R1,000,000 for charity. I was born in Cape Town 1976. In 1999 and 2000 I worked as a volunteer on the Cape Town Ambulance Service. In this role I had the opportunity to go into Red Cross Children’s Hospital . I was immediately struck by the staffs friendliness, caring and passionate energy which existed to help children get well. I joined a private company which sold surgical instruments and in 2001/2 Red Cross Children’s Hospital was one of my clients. I then became aware of the enormous financial pressure the hospital was under as all the care provided, instruments purchased and salaries all cost considerable amounts of money. Over the last 8 years I have travelled to various countries in various roles for the same company. About 4 years ago I decided that I wanted to raise funds for charity and felt that I needed to choose something risky and bizarre to grab people’s attention.  I thought that it would be wonderful to float from Robben Island to the mainland carried by balloons as  people around the world know Robben Island and Cape Town for incarcerating Nelson Mandela during Apartheid. I plan to raise a minimum of R1,000,000 by asking people to buy raffle tickets for £10 each, which will enter them into a draw for a prize of four flights to Cape Town from the UK and a week’s accommodation in the Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town.  (1 weeks accomodation for four people or two weeks for two people)
